International student numbers on the rise in the NT

International student numbers are continuing to increase at Charles Darwin University and are projected to rise by a further 20 per cent over the next four years, according to figures from CDU’s International Office.

Gearing up for the influx is CDU’s North Flinders International House (NFIH), which provides student accommodation on the Casuarina campus.

NFIH manager, Dean Preddy said that applications for student accommodation had “almost doubled since last year”.

“Where, in the past, international students have made up approximately 20 to 30 per cent of our residence, by what I am seeing at the moment, I’m expecting this to increase to above 40 per cent,” Mr Preddy said.

He said NFIH had filled 135 of its 270 rooms already and the flood of applications had been “astounding”.

NFIH is making the most of the traditionally quiet January time by upgrading its facilities.

“By the beginning of the semester, all 270 rooms will have a study desk and chair, an energy saving desk lamp and a clothes airer.

“We are also upgrading the laundry equipment with 13 new energy and water-efficient washing machines which will be provided free of charge to our residents,” Mr Preddy said.

The piece de resistance, however, will come in the form of wireless internet installation.

“By the start of Higher Education teaching this year, all rooms will be provided with free wireless internet access,” he said.

North Flinders International House is also developing an extensive events program to encourage social, community and personal development for all its residents to enhance students “CDU Experience”.
